February Updates

Posted by Ash Qin on 03 March 2026, 12:01:32 pm

February whispers of renewal, where the chill of winter begins to yield to the promise of spring. It's a time for fresh starts, clearing out the old, and forging new connections. At Alpha-Fox, this February has been all about strengthening ties within the Stargate community and addressing some behind-the-scenes housekeeping we forgot to mention previously.

Table of Contents

TL;DR

  • A forgotten shadow from the previous cycle has been banished. Realms have been expanded, anomalies contained, no more whispers of impending collapse.
  • Hidden alliances have been forged across distant outposts. Gatekeepers from far-flung worlds now gather under one.
  • Bridges between further realities created.
  • Glyphs light up the void, though some ancient symbols await their awakening.

The January storage squeeze

This one should've been mentioned sooner, but I forgot. Back in January, we were running out of storage on the database server. To avoid the kind of failure that ends with "why is everything on fire and why are there no error logs?", we took the ASN down briefly and increased storage capacity. It was a quick, controlled outage, but vastly preferable to waking up to the digital equivalent of a blown naquadah reactor.

The good news is that we've since normalised our data storage, and most of the data we keep has a natural lifespan of about a year. That means growth is much more predictable now, and it's unlikely we'll need another emergency expansion in the long term.

Gate Builders

For the last few months, we've been secretly running a parallel project in the background. In February, we've been very focused on it, and we can finally reveal it!

We've been talking with several of the largest Stargate communities in Second Life, and we reached the same conclusion, the Stargate community does best when it can actually find itself.

So we've been working to merge Discords (and in some cases, help create them where they didn't exist), bringing Stargate networks, Stargate sims, Stargate vendors, and creators into one shared space.

It's taken a lot of discussion and effort to make sure everyone is happy with how this works, because "one place" should never mean "one voice".

The Discord as of writing contains Cater's Creations, Hexem's House of Gadgets, OS labs, SCS Systems, Stargate Multiverse, VK Labs, Novum Stargate Network, and of course, the Alteran Stargate Network. We expect more to come!

Why we're doing it

At Alpha-Fox, introducing Discord over the last year has made it much easier for us to stay engaged. We found faster feedback loops, easier announcements, better support, and a real sense of community momentum.

Now we're extending that idea outward, bringing the wider Second Life Stargate community together into a shared hub, not as a takeover, but as a meeting point.

Shared space, decentralised control

This is the part we cared about most.

Discord now has its own unique website and is operated as a communal system between the different Stargate creators and communities.

We're also deliberately keeping things decentralised; there are new systems in place that allow community heads to update the website, adjust rules, and manage shared resources universally through a new organisation GitHub setup. No single group should become a bottleneck or a gatekeeper.

Why Alpha-Fox Discord became the base

We chose the Alpha-Fox Discord as the foundation simply because it already had the largest user numbers and it was already structured in a way that could scale into a shared community hub.

The end result is bigger than any one group, having multiple communities in one place means we can all share events, releases, fixes, roleplay happenings, and general "what's going on", without everything being scattered across isolated islands.

Infrastructure and Community Upgrades

A dedicated site

The Discord server now has its own home, Gate Builders lives at gate.builders.

Group chat relays cross-community

We have now added further new group chat relays, bridging multiple in-world groups with Discord chats. So communities can stay connected even when people are logged out, region-hopping, or stuck in the void between teleports.

Emojis, chevrons, and glyphs
  • We now have many new emojis representing the different communities.
  • We also have custom Milky Way address emojis (yes, the good stuff).
  • However, due to our current Discord boost limit, we don't yet have enough emoji slots to add additional full glyph sets like Pegasus or Universe-style glyphs (one day the emoji budget will be as vast as the gate network; today is not that day).

Credits

Special thanks to a couple who helped build some pivotal infrastructure for the Gate Builders launch:

  • Vala Avro created a brand-new website for the project.
  • Horny Nuzzle fixed up and built the new group chat relays between the different in-world groups and Discord chats.

I'd also like to thank everyone else that came together to make this huge change with our respective communities.

Final Thoughts

February's efforts may not have rewritten the stars, but they've bridged worlds in meaningful ways. From resolving that sneaky storage snag to launching Gate Builders, it's been about sustainability and community.

Development stats for the gate builders project: 52 commits, 145 files added, 15 deleted, 261 files changed, 7,481 insertions (+), and 1,250 deletions (-).

If you've got questions, ideas, or want to join communities, pop into our Discord; we're all ears.
